The area is as safe as you can get in Santiago these days. The room was very clean. No rubber mat inside the bathtub, but there is a convenient hand rail to keep from slipping that is very useful. The staff and cleaning person were very amicable.

The location is supremely convenient with two subway stops within 500 m along with a bus stop in the corner. Providencia IS the tourist district. Plenty of stores, pharmacies, restaurants (both dine-in and fast food including the Fuente Alemana and the Giratorio which are highly recommended), a cultural center for theatre and orchestras and at some distance, the Cencosud Costanera (taking the subway and stopping at Tobalaba is recommended). Depending on the traveler's budget, you'll be able to find something that fits your budget.
